The Photographers/Head Shots:
(I don't have any specific connection with any photographer. Use anyone you please. I don't have any arrangement with the photographers at the bottom of the page other than I think they will give you a great rate and do a great job. Both of them have taken pictures of me and I was very pleased with the results. There are a lot of photographers in the area. Here are a few guidelines and recommendations. Keep in mind that you get headshots included with your Workshop tuition. Should you need additional photography work in the future you may want to consider the photographers on this website.)
Choosing a photographer is always a challenge. You want one that will capture who you are. Don't try to look younger or older than you really look. Notice, I didn't say "younger than you are". Many actors look their age. Nothing wrong with that. Some look younger, some older. Whatever your "look" is, go for that.
Traditionally, young people want to look older and older people want to look younger. That works against you. If you're 16 and look 12, that's a real plus. You have the maturity to memorize lines, work with people, etc. and yet you look younger. Good for you. Don't have a headshot taken that makes you 18. Or, even worse, 21.
Just get a picture that looks like you. Not someone else. Not someone you wished you look like. You. That'll work.
Now that we have that out of the way, let's talk nuts and bolts.
Many photographers will take your picture for a reasonable fee. You should be able to get a good session for around $150. That's the low end. You might want to get a higher priced photographer but that won't necessarily guarantee a better headshot. Remember, an acting headshot is different than a modeling Z card, or whatever they call it. You're not after a glamour shot. You want a head shot that looks like YOU.
After you've had your picture taken make sure that the photographer gives you a disk with all, I repeat - ALL, your shots on it. Many photographers will take a lot of pictures of you. In a session you should have at least 30 or 40 shots taken. When you're done you should get a disk. Give the photographer a few days, a few DAYS, to put the disk together. Some will do it while you wait.
Be careful. Some photogs will take your picture and then give you one or two hi-res copies and want to charge you upwards of $50 for each additional hi-res copy. In their mind they own your pictures. You paid for the session, not the pictures. That doesn't work for me. Get all your pix in hi-res on a disk for the session fee. Sometimes they will charge a few extra dollars to touch up a photo or two. That's okay, it needed. But don't let them take out all your wrinkles! Remember, we want a picture of YOU. The last thing you want a director to say when you walk through the door is "Excuse me, we actually wanted to audition your daughter." That's happened.
So, choose a photog carefully. Pay your $200 or so and walk away with a disc that you can use however you choose. Some will put your pictures online. That's great. But the resolution of online photos is not high enough, generally speaking, to print a decent head shot. Make sure you get them on a disk.
All that being said, here are a couple of photographers who are terrific. Use them. Find your own. Whatever you want. Just don't get burned, as some of my actors have, by using a photographer who doesn't play by the above rules.
If you're a member of the Workshop, past or present, you can always call me for feedback or input on a photographer or a head shot. Happy to help. All part of the Workshop.
